The Treatment

What Is Crown Lengthening?

Crown lengthening removes excess gum tissue to expose more of the natural tooth above the gumline. Sometimes a small amount of supporting bone is adjusted as well. The visible portion of the tooth appears longer once the excess tissue is gone.

It serves two distinct purposes. Functionally, it is often a prerequisite for placing a dental crown. Enough tooth structure must be visible above the gumline for a crown to grip securely. Cosmetically, it is the primary treatment for a gummy smile, where excess tissue makes teeth appear short.

Dr. Baradaran performs crown lengthening with the precision needed to achieve a natural, symmetrical result. Both restorative and aesthetic indications are treated with the same exacting standard.

Two Indications

Restorative or Cosmetic?

Restorative

Crown Placement Requires It

When a tooth is broken, decayed, or worn down near the gumline, there may not be enough visible structure for a crown to seat and bond properly. A crown placed on insufficient tooth structure cannot grip and will eventually loosen or fall off.

Crown lengthening exposes the additional structure the restorative dentist needs. It is frequently the last step before a crown, bridge anchor, or large filling is placed on a compromised tooth. Without it, those restorations cannot be done predictably.

The procedure is typically covered by dental insurance when performed for restorative purposes. Dr. Baradaran's team will verify your benefits prior to treatment.

Cosmetic

Gummy Smile Correction

A gummy smile is often caused by excess tissue covering what is otherwise a full-length tooth. The teeth are there. They are simply hidden beneath tissue.

Crown lengthening removes the excess tissue and recontours the gumline to reveal more tooth. Because the change affects multiple teeth, symmetry is everything. Each side must be treated evenly for the result to look natural.

Cosmetic crown lengthening can be among the most impactful smile improvements available. Often no other restorative work is required.

The Procedure

What to Expect Step by Step

01

Consultation

Dr. Baradaran evaluates the tooth structure, gumline, and bone levels. For restorative cases, he coordinates with your restorative dentist on the ideal margin placement.

02

Procedure Day

Local anesthetic is administered. The procedure takes 1–2 hours depending on the number of teeth involved. Patients are awake and comfortable throughout.

03

Tissue Removal

Excess gum tissue is carefully removed and the gumline recontoured. If bone adjustment is needed, a small amount is removed to establish the correct biological width.

04

Healing Period

The gums require 2–3 months to fully heal and stabilize before a permanent crown can be placed. A temporary restoration maintains function in the interim.

Expertise

Why Dr. Baradaran

Crown lengthening is technically straightforward. The margin for error in cosmetic cases is zero. Asymmetrical results, over-removal, or poor coordination with the restorative dentist's margin requirements are common pitfalls when a generalist performs the procedure.

Dr. Baradaran approaches crown lengthening with the same surgical precision he applies to every soft tissue procedure. For restorative cases, he communicates directly with the referring dentist to confirm the correct biological width and margin depth before healing begins.

For cosmetic cases, his aesthetic eye ensures the recontoured gumline is symmetrical and natural. It is an eye developed over decades of treating Beverly Hills patients.
